Boardmasters and the World Surf League (WSL) have confirmed the world-class initial competitor line up for Boardmasters 2016 including WSL Men’s and Women’s Qualifying Series (QS1000) and WSL Men’s and Women’s Longboard Qualifying Series presented by The Stable (LQS1,000). These events taking place at one of the UK’s most stunning beachside locations, Fistral Beach, Cornwall from Wednesday 10 – Sunday 14 August.
As stop #29 on the WSL international qualifying series tour, the cream of the crop, first class athletes will descend upon Fistral Beach to cement Boardmasters as the UK’s premier Surf Competition. Record numbers of fans, family and friends are expected to watch all the sporting action unfold. Boardmasters Fistral Beach site is open to the public, there is no ticket necessary so festivalgoers and locals are free to come down and take in all the sporting action. The WSL Longboarding categories will see Men’s world #1 Antoine Delpero return to Fistral Beach. Last year, the French favourite showed poise, agility and skill take the title from local longboarding legend Ben Skinner. The category is sure to be a tough call with Ben Skinner and fellow hometown hero Adam Griffiths going toe to toe in a bid for the win, as well as the always impressive Edouard Delpero.
After the incredible success of last year, the WSL Women’s Longboard (LQS1000) division is going from strength to strength; Boardmasters is stoked to have last year’s winner Alice Lemoigne returning. The category is hotly contested with 2015 WSL champion Rachel Tilly back again to lay it on the line and battle it out for the top spot. France’s Victoria Vergara who’s rising up the ranks with consistently strong performances, relative WSL newcomer and Cornwall’s own Emily Currie will be representing for Britain alongside Jenny Bryant fresh from winning the English National Women’s Longboard Title.
Boardmasters is delighted to welcome back Luke Dillon who’s impressed in the heats for the WSL Men’s Open. Huge home names and visiting international stars will battle it out for the coveted Boardmasters title including twice UK Pro Surf Tour Champion Alan Stokes, the formidable Boardmasters regular Jayce Robinson. The highly decorated Australian ripper Jared Hickel will also be going for gold, as will rising Portuguese star Tomas Fernandes.
Moving over to the Women’s categories WSL Women’s Open category, the UK’s top female pros are set to give fans a thrilling battle out on the waves as Boardmasters confirms entries from top rider Justine Dupont who’s already racked up 16 wins this season as well as current UK Pro Surf Tour Champion Lucy Campbell and the up and coming Peonie Knight.
