Supertubos, Peniche – Portugal – The ASP WorldChampionship Tour (WCT) is set to resume and current ASP World Number 1 and two times ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 31, is composed and confident about the solid tour leg that lies ahead.
“The past few seasons I’ve had pretty poor starts so to get two wins (Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and Billabong Pro Tahiti) from the first five events along with a couple of third places, has put me in a great position and definitely lifted my confidence,” Fanning said.
This week sees Fanning depart for the first of three consecutive ASP WCT events, the Hurley Pro at Trestles, the Quiksilver Pro in Hossegor (France), culminating with the Rip Curl Pro presented by Moche in Peniche, Portugal.
Following his emphatic victory at the Billabong Pro Tahiti, Fanning has been preparing at home in Coolangatta (Queensland, Australia) for the upcoming competitive leg.
“It’s a short break between Tahiti and Trestles but I have definitely given myself some time to unwind,” Fanning said. “After doing a lot of nothing for a few days I’ve got back into training and getting my boards ready for the next leg. The waves around home provide a pretty good training ground for the next few stops so I’m feeling good.”
With previous victories at each of the upcoming tour stops, Fanning is comfortable aboutthe road ahead, especially his return to Portugal.
“It’s one of my favorite places and waves on tour, especially after the waves we scored last year at Supertubos,” Fanning said. “I think that was the best beach break I’ve ever surfed. I love competing in Portugal. The people are really vocal spectators and go nuts when the comp is on. I can’t wait to get back there!”
The 2011 Rip Curl Pro Portugal featured some of the most perfect waves ever seen in professional surfing, with four days straight of epic tubing waves breaking across the sandbar mere meters from tens on thousands of passionate European surfing fans lining the beach.
