Japan’s turntable maestro, DJ KENTARO, has taken music appreciation in all genres to another level, and has managed to exceed expectations from his fans and has also gained respect of the music industry around the world. As Japan’s premiere DJ/producer/scratch master-turntablist, he became Asia’s first record-breaking world champion at the DMC World Final in 2002. From then DJ KENTARO went on to play the world-famous Fuji Rock Festival, which paved the way for his global recognition and to grace the stages of some of the biggest international music events.
In December 2004, under the Ninja Tunes label, DJ KENTARO released “On the Wheels of Solid Steel,” his mix-tape CD mixed with a collection of Ninja Tunes tracks. As a leading producer coupled with exclusive remixes, he has amassed quite a collection of collaborators, musicians and singers, remixes for domestic and international artists, and has contributed to numerous song-writing productions, which is available world-wide.
After the release of the DVD, “National Geoscratch,” in January 2005, which covers his first 40-day, solo European tour, one of the featured clips, “Loop Daigakuin,” has reached nearly 3,000,000 views on You Tube. During this time DJ KENTARO appeared on numerous television programs such as, NHK’s “Top Runner” and Space Shower TV’s “ID.”
In April of 2006, he officially signed with the Ninja Tune label and in 2007, his first solo album, “Enter” was released internationally. This album was highly acclaimed for its intense rhythms and genre-crossing sound design. It reached #1 on the Oricon Indies Chart, and both the album and single were the #1 hit on the iTunes Dance Chart.
In 2008, DJ KENTARO released “Tuff Cuts”, on the UK reggae label, Pressure Sounds, and his DJ mix, “Nama Live Mix”, was later released on his own label, Endeavor.
In 2010, he participated in the 20-year anniversary compilation CD for Ninja Tune and in April of 2011, DJ KENTARO played to a fanatic crowd at the legendary US music Mecca, the Coachella Festival.
When Kentaro is behind a set of turntables and a mixer, he is on stage. More than just a technical DJ, he is a performer, inciting the crown in to a frenzy while titillating the scratch fetishists as he cuts and juggles through hip-hop, reggae, drum ‘n’ bass, dub step, house and electro with his “no walls between the music” ethos.
He is on a three week European tour and is only in the UK for two days, so it’s a major coup for the small seaside club in Devon to be sharing one of those two days with London. His schedule list is quite literally, Thursday/Paris – Friday/Woolacombe – Saturday/London then back to the continent Sunday.
Being as good as Kentaro is, we could only think of one man up to the job of warming up for him so we’ve booked fellow Ninja Tune /Solid Steel heavyweight DJ Cheeba.
Pulled from Cheeba’s site –
DJ Cheeba is the sight and sound of Solid Steel’s new school. Heady beats and blistering sounds come together with iconic music videos, obscure YouTube finds and creative custom edits as Bristol’s DJ Cheeba cuts and splices audio and video live on turntables. Following the invitation to join Ninja Tune’s legendary Solid Steel radio show as a resident in 2010, Cheeba has spent the last couple of years producing a number of themed audio mixtapes and groundbreaking video projects while relentlessly touring some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the UK, Europe and beyond.
Over the last few years Cheeba has shared stages with and supported acts such as: Mos Def, Mixmaster Mike, Coldcut, Red Snapper, Dead Prez, DJ Yoda, Roots manuva, The Cinematic Orchestra, The Bays, Ghostface Killah, Cut Chemist, Kid Koala, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Hexstatic, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Krush, Bomb The Bass, DJ Kentaro, DJ Food & DK, J-Rocc, Anti Pop Consortium, Alice Russell, Questlove, Guru, DJ Vadim, Bonobo and many more.
Cheeba’s first video mixtape ‘The Reels of Solid Steel’ released in 2010, was widely received as a revolutionary step in mixtape production and helped to launch Solid Steel as the home of the worlds best audio visual mixes. In 2011, the much anticipated follow up ‘Revenge of The Nerd’ quickly gained over 60,000 downloads in the week following its launch and its huge variety of source material and highly detailed style secured Cheeba his place at the forefront of the scene alongside pioneers such as Hexstatic, DJ Yoda and Coldcut.
At the end of 2011, Cheeba returned with the release of ‘DJ Cheeba: Live’. His latest AV adventure aimed to give a better impression of the live experience by adding footage from an epic show at London’s famous venue The Roundhouse alongside creative green screen studio sessions which placed him “inside” the videos. Once more, it was met with wide spread acclaim and rapidly reached number 1 in the iTunes music video podcast charts.
Drawing on his turntablist history and lifelong love of cut and paste music, audiences can expect a seamless adventure through styles made to make you dance, think and smile. Cheeba is more than a DJ, he’s a live experience not to be missed… Your eyes wont believe your ears!
