Well it was weekend of tricky conditions which usually only signals one thing – it’s the return of the contest season! Marine Drive, Woolacombe played host to the first BLU contest of the season and we have two reports from events this weekend – firstly from reigning BLU champ Ben Haworth & secondly from the Board Barn’s eye in the sky Guy Maddocks...
This weekend saw the first BLU contest of year held at Marine Drive, Woolacombe Beach. It was a super fun event and I think every one had a fun weekend, apart from the shocking surf with howling onshore winds and a bit of rain. The surf on on the first day of the contest Saturday started off really good, with 2-3 foot and clean fun waves but by ten o’clock the wind started to mess the waves up, making it very hard to surf. The wind just got stronger and stronger as the day went on.
On Sunday the waves were a little better… but not much! A little less wind and a few better shape waves coming through, again about 2-3 foot waves.
So another good result to the start off the year for me and I am amped for all the other contest this year!
2012 Comp season is upon us and here we have The British Longboard Union 2012 Event No1 – Where? only right here on our beautiful Devon shores, that’s where!
Saturday 21st of April dawned with light winds and a few feet of swell at Middle Beach Woolacombe, RESULT we thought! Little did we know?
We got under way, with some of the finest Longboarders in Europe doing their thing. Ben ‘Skindog’ Skinner, Adam Griffith, our very own 2011 Defending BLU Champion Ben “Board Barn” Haworth, Lil Alex Maddocks and Co showing us why British Longboarding is at the fore front of UK & European surfing, despite its shocking lack of financial backing.
Under 16’s Boys is a hotly contested category, with Jerseys Ben Bates and The Ho’s Jack Unsworth battling it out with Wales’s Arran Bright among the top contenders. In the U18’s, well, we have Brauntons Alex Maddocks doing his very stylish thang, in the Open we have a good showing as well, with Ben Haworth leading the charge.
Mr Board Barn put in a valiant effort in the Masters category only to draw Multiple Welsh and UK Champion Colin Bright and recently turned 40 year old Cornish Iron Man and shit hot surfer Matt Thomas, Ugghh Errr Game over Mr Maddocks :0(, still got 3rd in the 4 man heat so lets hope for a better draw next comp! ( PLEASE !!! )
Conditions were rapidly deteriorating, the wind was getting mental and the surf tricky as, some outstanding surfing went down with Alex Maddocks making it through to the semi’s only to be confronted by Skindog and Adam Griffiths and just couldn’t find a second wave to boost his score to get through, DOH!!! This did mean he finished and amazing 5th in the OPEN, at 17 years old, SICK…..
Ben Haworth pulled off a stunning semi final busting two air’s on his 9’ board and leaving the judges in no doubt of a place in the final.
Over in the Ladies Claire Smale, Gracie Davies and D Stickly, amongst others, were as always looking lovely and surfing very well too – got some real good Ladies Longboard talent here with some great progressive surfing on show, lovin it.
Then Day 2, OH Dear, Howling winds and well, Howling Wind really!!!
The show must go on and indeed it did, a great show I must say with the National Trust’s involvement this year we had a great judging truck, contestant tents, Bean bags and some lovely winners trophies, cheers guy’s!
Masters and Grand masters semis went in first, but I wasn’t in em, so onto the OPEN ;0) (No, I’m not bitter!!)
To say the conditions were testing is I think an understatement but the guy’s did they’re thing and what a thing it was, great surfing form both Ben’s and Adam.
In the U18’s Boys, Alex, Ben and Connor were exchanging the lead, whilst the Ladies were doing well to even get out back in the nasty conditions.
Some bitch conditions over the weekend with some people un able to even get out back, and remember, these ain’t no weekend warriors, Respek.
So, enough blurb I hear you cry, what were the bloody results Mr BB???
