In the first day of surfing on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) calendar, competition was forced to move from from Bells Beach to Jan Juc to take advantage of the three foot (1.5 meter) waves on offer.
In a huge day of surfing action, three events got underway starting with Round 1 of the Championship Moves Pro Junior Presented by CHIKO, followed by the opening Rounds of the ASP 1-Star Championship Moves Open Presented by CHIKO and the EVO Women’s Pro Junior Presented by Ghanda.
Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, VIC/AUS), the youngest competitor in the field at just 13-years-old, started his ASP Pro Junior Series career with a heat win, advancing to the next round where he’ll face Tim Macdonald (AUS), Chris Robertson (AUS) and Will Coy (AUS).
“I just tried to get a couple scores quickly and as many waves as I could,” Van Dijk said. “I wasn’t planning on going in this event, but I got offered a spot and made the last minute decision to give it a go.”
Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, VIC/AUS) started 2012 with a win in the opening heat of the inaugural Championship Moves Open. Banting will be competing in both the Championship Moves Open and Pro Junior.
“It’s good to get out of that first heat,” Banting said. “I haven’t surfed in a heat in about 2 months, since the ASP World Juniors in Brazil so it’s good to get back into the competition side of things. It’s great to have the Star and a Pro Junior events together, you get to stay active and the surf is fun if you get the right ones.”
Glyndyn Ringrose (Phillip Island, VIC/AUS) who competed on the elite ASP World Tour in 1999/2000 finished 2nd in his opening round heat at the Championship Moves Open today. Ringrose hasn’t competed in an ASP Star event since 2003.
“I saw that there was an event here in Victoria and I thought I’d give it a go,” Ringrose said. “I was very nervous, I was trying all these big snaps and kept falling off, I was scrambling and doing all the wrong things. I got second which is unreal because I thought I was coming last. Ever since leaving the tour I’ve just been living on Phillip Island, shaping boards, bringing up kids and I still keep involved in surfing by driving the skis at the Rip Curl Pro Bells and the Search.
Among the day’s other standout performers were Sean Mawson (AUS), Shane Holmes (AUS), Noa Deane (AUS), Soli Bailey (AUS), Mitch Baker and Philippa Anderson (AUS).
The Championship Moves Open and Pro Junior Presented by CHIKO will run from Jan 5th to Jan 9th.
The EVO Women’s Pro Junior Presented by Ghanda will run from Jan 5th to Jan 8th.
