Jesus Surf Classic Croyde Bay, 10-11 Sep 2011

September 7, 2011

Its September, it’s quietened down on the beaches, we have waves… there must be something happening?! Ah yes! It’s the 19th running of the Jesus Surf Classic this weekend – it’s coming to North Devon again – to Croyde Bay, 10- 11 September 2011…. yes peeps that’s this weekend! It’s going to a brilliant end of summer shake down!

With a couple of days to go, entries are in for the Jesus Surf Classic which comes to its North Devon home once again, over the weekend of 10th – 11th September with increased prize money, the new Groms ( U12 ) division continuing , and the mobile Skatepark. This hugely successful surf contest has been running for 19 years and this year’s competition looks like being another great event.

The Jesus Surf Classic is organised and run by Christian Surfers UK and this year there as well as a free contest T-shirt for each competitor, there is over £1700 of prize money, to be shared between the eight categories, with the Open men’s surfing champion receiving £300, and increased prize money for the Women’s Open, and U18’s Division. Last year’s event was well subscribed with over 100 entries so contestants are being advised to get their entry forms in early.

As an acknowledgement of the increasing number of young surfers coming through, and to encourage their development, the Groms ( U12 ) division which was introduced last year, will continue.

The event is widely regarded as a bit of an end of summer surf festival, with a mellow vibe, and lots of other entertainment than just in the water. There will be a Big Move skateboard competition on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the purpose-built skate park. We are looking forward to seeing lots of skaters coming down to this event once again.

As before, over 100 Christian Surfers volunteers from around the country will be involved in organising the weekend, making it ideal for competitors, supporters, and of course their families. There will be a skate park, marquee and BBQ, and surf and skate movies will be shown on the large screen throughout the weekend.

The standard of surfing is always very high, with Woolacombe local, Stuart Campbell, winning the Men’s event last year, and Looe’s Gabi Rowe taking both victory in the Junior and Open Women’s division, along with a nice cheque and trophy. It is also however a great opportunity for those wishing to enter their first competition, in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

We have agreed a 2½ day special rate for the Ruda campsite with Parkdean Holidays for competitors and their supporters.  This means that you can stay on your pitch for all of Sunday.  When booking your camping pitch, mention that you are a competitor and get the special rate. We are grateful once again to Parkdean Holidays for their support.

The Jesus Surf Classic has become one of the biggest and longest running surf contests in the UK, and Christian Surfers UK are once again very much looking forward to hosting it at one of the best beach breaks on the North Coast, Croyde Bay.

To enter the event if you are a previous competitor, you will get your entry form in the post, otherwise download it from the website www.christiansurfers.co.uk

Also look out for the Jesus Longboard Classic which will be running on October 15-16 and will consist of Open, Women’s, and Master’s and Junior categories.

This stand-alone contest, which has been running since 2007, will be held at Polzeath, North Cornwall.

Please come on down and show your support, its a great weekend of surfing, skating, music and fun for the family! Plus you’ll get to hang out with loads of great people and maybe grab yourself some Eyeball Stickers!!
