2011 is shaping up to be a busy year for Nick Thorn and he has a lot of miles ahead of him!
Its nearly time for Nick Thorn to take on his first of three paddles and his biggest challenge yet… Over the weekend of the 16th-18th of June Nick will be undertaking a daunting board paddle from Hartland Quay around the Eastern side of Lundy and back to Croyde beach to coincide with the GoldCoast Oceanfest.
At 36miles it is his longest paddle to date, to put this another way… it’s roughly the same as 179 Eiffel Towers or 645 football pitches!!
As with Nick’s previous challenges he will be undertaking the paddles to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West. If you would like to donate please visit Nick’s JustGiving Page – donations large or small are welcome, every little really does help!
In September Nick will also attempt to become the first person ever to paddle across the Bristol Channel, from Porthcawl, Wales to Ilfracombe, England. Although this paddle comes in slightly shorter, at approximately 26 miles, it is set to be a real challenge across one of the most tidal waterways on the planet. This paddle works out at around 114 Empire State Buildings and he will be trying to avoid ships of a similar size to that on the way!
Now, if you were thinking that two paddles was a little bit lazy, Nick has been given the opportunity to paddle the English Channel in July – which he has taken… obviously. Nick said “It has been a lifelong dream of mine to paddle the Channel, so this was far to good an opportunity to pass up with a total ban on Channel crossings apparently imminent. I get the feeling that I will be spending a lot of time with my trainer and physio this year”.
Nick is relying a lot on word of mouth so please invite all of your friends to the Facebook Event and lets see if we can eclipse the £5000 that was raised last year when Nick swam 22 miles from Lundy Island to Woolacombe. Check out the Lundy swim!
Every person who donates to Nicks Challenges via the JustGiving Page will be thrown in to the mix to win a 1:1 Private Surf Lesson with the man himself, you also stand the chance to win a lesson with Nick for you and 7 mates!
