Johnny Fryer wins Saltrock Open 2011

May 31, 2011

After an exciting and fun packed first day of competition it was time for the big guys in the Open to hit the water on day two of competition.

The surf conditions were pretty similar to the previous day with three foot onshore waves with plenty of crumbling lips on offer. The field for the Open was the largest entry this contest had historically winessed. All the Big guns had attended along with a few rowdy locals who were keen to show their dominance in the local waves.

There was some blistering surfing in the early rounds from standouts such as Jayce Robinson, Russell Winter, Alan Stokes, Stu Campbell, and Alex Baker who were putting on creamy performances to easily progress thru the first two rounds.
Unfortunately two of the local boys didnt fair so well with Charley “i’m Grunta league champ im gonna smoke these guys” Charlesworth going down in a really tough heat and then was heard muttering about how his equipment had let him down and that he’d wished he’d worn his favourite lucky speedos for his heat.

Another goliath from North Devon was Scott Rannochan, I had a quick word with Scott moments before his heat with good friend Russell Winter and he was looking sharp, focused, and hungry for a result, the small fact that he had taken 40 minutes to get in his wetsuit and fallen asleep half way through doing this suggested otherwise. After his friends had directed him in the right direction of the see he was unstoppable as he drifted off towards baggy point never to be seen again.

The Pro junior was also set alight with some impressive surfing and our local boys were pushing hard with Alex and Stu leading the charge.

The open ladies also completed to the quarters where Andrea Lawrence came unglued to a home crowd. She was disappointed with her performance but i’m sure this wont be the last time we see her in a contest jersey. The other ladies were ripping it up with Gwen Spurlock, Lucy Campbell and a visiting Ozzie, Amy Stewart, shredding it up.

Finals day.
Monday morning dawned with a drop in the wind, but also a drop in the swell. But after the low tide push the waves jumped up to contestable and we were off again. Due to the smaller conditions the judges were moved to the waters edge in a ramshackle tent where they stayed for most of the day in freezing winds, rain, and i’m sure it even snowed at one point? Well probably not but it bloody felt like it.

The surfing on the last day was mind blowing in the small conditions with heat draws that you looked at and said to yourself, “phew , glad i’m not in that one”.

At the end of the contest it was the best that had come through to the finals and had surfed a lot of heats to get there.

The pro juniors had frothed all the way thru and in the end first place went to Stuart Campbell from Woolacombe followed by Alex baker from Croyde

The mens Open was a close run thing with the leader changing about four times in the heat… Stoksey banged an air reverse, Russ was snapping and gouging, and Jayce was sticking to the rights and tapping them nicely. But it was the man from the Isle of Whight Johnny Fryer, that with a series of four backhand smashes secured his victory and a cheque for a grand.

The ladies also proved that they are not to be sniffed at with some big surfing in the final. Birthday girl Gwen Spurlock had some nice rides as Amy Stewart and Lucy Campbell after surfing a lot of heats unfortunately fizzled just a bit in the final. In the end Amy Stewart did enough to take first place.

After a prize giving from Nick “the Saffa” Williams it was a super quick pack down, a fifteen way split of a cubic tonne of relentless and it was back home over the hill for tea and a well earned lie down for everyone…Apart from Rannochan who should have been in bed all weekend?!

A massive thanks to all concerned, the Christian Surfers, Saltrock, The judges, the surfers, and Relentless, and also to Dave Reed, John Owen, and Ester spears, oh and Claire the un-sung hero of the contest..

See you all down in Newquay on the 8-9th of July for the Animal night surf, and the Nike 6.0 cash for tricks comp. its going to be huge..

Cheers Bcat
