Reub’s puts the UK on Innersection!!

May 18, 2011

Massive congratulations to Reubyn Ash who has placed 3rd on Innersection for his video!! Well done mate – we’re super stoked here in the Eyeball office! Reubyn Ash & Tim Boydell doing it for the UK – Thank you to everyone who voted!!

Here’s his interview on Innersection….

Not many people really noticed Reubyn Ash’s Innersection submission last year. I barely remember it myself, just that it was gray and far away-looking with some fuzzy techno he might have made himself. But I’d seen Reubyn surfing around Indo, and I knew the guy had some crazy skills. So I was really stoked to see him enter again this year, and even more stoked when I saw that the edit was really strong.

Hailing from a small town outside Cornwall England, Reubyn took a risk on a working with a local friend who’d recently quit his plumbing job to pursue his dream making surf movies. Not a very clever dream for a guy who can land kerrupt flips, but apparently he’s good at this too. Tim Boyton’s bold, crisp edit and Reubyn Ash’s flash, tricksy surfing proved a killer combo this round. Proper. —NM

INNERSECTION: I THINK YOU’RE THE FIRST EUROPEAN SURFER EVER IN A TAYLOR STEELE FILM.
REUBYN ASH: You know, I was actually just thinking about that. Pretty humbling. I’m proper stoked. It hasn’t even set it yet. It’s hard to explain…

WELL, THERE’S NOT ACTUALLY A MOVIE YET, SO…I GUESS IT’S NOT OFFICIAL.
When I got the news…it’s just kind of surreal. I’m proper stoked about it. Timmy and I stayed up till 3 o’clock in the morning a few nights at the last minute working on it. I was quite happy how it turned out.

HE DID A GOOD JOB. GOT PEOPLE’S ATTENTION, AT LEAST.
Yeah, I like his editing style. It was totally different than a lot of the other stuff on the site.

WERE YOU ABLE TO CHECK OUT THE OTHER SECTIONS?
Yeah, I watched all of them. Some good surfing. Albee’s section was sick. Those backside airs…that was proper. That inverted upsidedown late indie grab…I’ve never seen anyone do anything like that. I was so stoked to see that.

YEAH, THAT WAS PRETTY AMAZING.
I imagine he’ll come up with something crazy for the final. The dude’s got everything in his repetiore.

EVERYTHING EXCEPT A SPONSOR.
Yeah, it’s a shame. But hopefully this will be his golden ticket. He definitely deserves it.

IS THE PRESSURE ON YOU NOW TO NAIL YOUR REUBYO FLIP…PROPER?
Yeah, with the one I put out, I wasn’t really that stoked on. Ideally, I wouldn’t have shown it until I had a super clean one. I was getting real close, but then I hurt my foot and did some ligament damage, so I haven’t really been surfing that much lately. But I’m psyched to get back to trying it. I definitely want to get that in the film. For myself, you have to master a trick as smooth as you can get it.

WAS IT A TOUGH CALL WHETHER TO SHOW IT OR NOT?
I was gonna hold back, but then a few mates looked at it and they just liked seeing it, even if I didn’t make it. So we put it out there thinking, you know, if I saw I’d be stoked just to look at it. That’s all…it’s just something interesting to check out.

I LIKED HOW YOU JUST PUT IT AT THE END, ALMOST LIKE A PREVIEW: “COMING NEXT: THE REUBYO FLIP.”
We just figured it was something a bit different. You can see what I’m working on. That’s all it was.

HOW WAS THE COMMENTARY ON YOUR SECTION. ANYTHING STICK IN YOUR MIND?
You know, when we were putting together my section, I was looking at all the colors from recent footage, and that’s what I wanted to use. But that was all from Indo, so now I realize I didn’t really have any rights. I love surfing my backhand, but when you’re in Indo, it’s so hard to go right. But I really wanna work on getting some good rights for my final part though.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO BE FILMING?
We’re thinking about doing things around Europe, like Ireland and Scotland, to give things a different look.

I LIKE THAT. SO MUCH INDO…IT’S EASY, BUT IT’S GETTING BORING TO LOOK AT.
Yeah, I mean, the reason I love going to Indo is it’s so easy to get things done. In the UK, get some good days, but they’re a lot more rare so it’s hard to have everything else in place when it finally all comes together. Couple weeks in Indo, you’re guaranteed to get footage.

THAT’S WHY INNERSECTION BLUE HAD SO MUCH INDO IN IT.
Totally. But I’ve put out most of my Indo stuff on other things already. When I started thinking about doing Innersection, it was all kind of a last minute. That was the footage I had. But now, I’ve got  more time to take a few more risks.

A EURO-TOUR SECTION WOULD BE SICK. PROPER SICK.
Totally. I’m sitting on the beach at Sopalona, Spain right now. I brought a good friend to film, so I’m already on it.

EUROPEAN VACATION. I WANNA COME.
Yeah, me and Timmy have a been getting real excited, talking about some unique shots and new equipment…we’ve got a lot of ideas going.

TIM IS PSYCHING, HUH?
For sure. I’ve seen a lot of his work and he’s got a real passion. For him, it’s a massive chance to get some of his work out there and build some opportunity. He’s been texting me all day just frothing. I think he’s gonna put the effort in to get something proper. I’m stoked for him.

IT’S A BIT HARDER TO GET ANY INTERNATIONAL NOTICE COMING FROM EUROPE, RIGHT?
Definitely. I’m proper frothing out. I’ve watched Taylor’s movies since I was a little kid. I’ve watch them over and over again. To actually be part of one…it’s really flattering. It’s a personal achivement that I’m really stoked about.

WELL, THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN.
To have people appreciate your work, it’s amazing. I mean, I just love surfing. That’s it. That’s what really matters, innit?
