Haworth takes out 2nd BLU event of the year at Saunton

May 16, 2011

Ben Haworth took out the 2nd British Longboard Union event of the year to make it 2 from 2 this year.  Thanks to Guy @ The Board Barn for the contest write up:

Forecast, 1ft windswell , well it was better than that on the day, but only just, contestable though so the comp was ON.

Another fantastic turnout- the boys were over from Jersey; Elliot Dudley and Chris ‘Guts’ Griffiths were down from Wales; reigning champ James Parry and the Dog ( Ben Skinner ) was here from Cornwall.  I tell you the heats were about as stacked as it can get, huge junior turnout, crazy Masters turnout, you gotta love it!

Heats got under way with the U16′s on low tide, we’ve got some real talent coming through that’s for sure, Sam Cavin, Raif Gaskell and Ben Bates, were all over the tricky onshore conditions.

The Open guy’s went in as the tide pushed up, it was windy onshore crap, but surfable and these guys made it look easy, hang fives and tens on waves that didn’t even look rideable- amaaaazing! The Board Barn Dream Team were going well, Ben Haworth, Zak Lawton and Alex Maddocks all putting in some strong performances, Alex was surfing like a boy possessed, coming second behind Ashley Braunton in his first Open heat.

Haworth was on fire, don’t know what this lads eating for breakfast, but whatever brand it is, you wanna sponsor this guy.

The wind just became almost unbearable, the judges were doing a great job getting shot blasted for the whole day, 9am to 9pm!!!! Made of strong stuff these guy’s, well done, we really do appreciate it ( even though I didn’t get through, you all must have had sand in your eye’s at the time? ;0) )

The Masters and Ladies were marching through the heats- Alan Read, Shaun Marlow, Colin Bright,  Shag Howell and the incredible Chris ‘Guts’ Griffiths to name but a few of the huge contingent of old guys that still love to compete.

In the lovely Ladies category we had the likes of the gorgeous Candice O’Donnell, Grace Davies from Jersey, Becky Stanhope from Kernow and our own Juliet Marlow, all of them more than capable of out surfing most men in the water.

In the open Alex Maddocks drew the heat from hell, Ben Skinner, Jason Gray ( Skindog Glasser extraordinaire ) and Elliot Dudley!!! And you know what, he got 3rd, bloody fantastic, Ben is super impressed with him as is The Board Barn.  Last week Alex, who is British U16′s Longboard Champion, signed to surf for Animal Wetsuits. He said he’s stoked to join the team and looks forward to riding for them and with the help of Skindog Surfboards, The Board Barn and now Animal wetsuits looks forward to a great 2011 season.

All the guy’s and girls surfed to the usual fantastic standard, pushing Longboarding to new heights. It’s a lovely sight to see Croyde’s Zak Lawton; Barnstaple’s Ben Haworth & Greg Norman; Braunton’s Max Welland, Ashley Braunton, Alex Maddocks, Phil Hill & Juliet Marlow- we’ve got some of the best Longboarders in Europe here ( sorry if I’ve missed you, but my printers short on Ink! ).

Apologies for the poor quality of the photo’s below- This is the result of forgetting your tripod then leaving your camera with a drunk longboarder at the BLU after party in Billies and the Thatch… enjoy!
